Surgery & Investigations

At Kintra Vet, we offer a wide range of surgical procedures and diagnostic investigations to help keep your pets healthy, comfortable, and well-cared for. Whether it's a routine neutering procedure or a more complex diagnostic workup, our experienced team is here to support your pet every step of the way.

Surgical Procedures

We provide both routine and non-routine surgeries, carried out with the utmost care in a safe and sterile environment. Our most common procedures include:

  • Spays and Castrations
Neutering offers long-term health benefits and helps prevent unwanted litters. We offer full pre- and post-operative guidance for a smooth recovery.

  • Lumpectomies
If your pet has a lump or growth, we may recommend surgical removal. We will discuss all options with you and can arrange further diagnostic testing where needed.

  • Dental Procedures
We offer dental scale and polish treatments to help prevent dental disease, and carry out tooth extractions when necessary for your pet’s health and comfort.

  • Other Soft Tissue Surgeries
From wound repair to internal procedures, we offer a range of additional surgeries depending on your pet’s needs. We also refer to trusted specialists when appropriate.

Diagnostic Investigations

Prompt and accurate diagnosis helps us treat your pet quickly and effectively. We offer a variety of in-house and external investigations, including:

  • Ultrasound Scanning
A non-invasive imaging method used to diagnose internal issues, check organ function, and guide treatment plans.

  • Pre-Operative Blood Testing
Recommended especially for older pets or those with existing conditions, these tests check for underlying issues that could affect anaesthesia or surgery.

  • Urine Sampling
Urinalysis provides valuable information about your pet’s kidney function, hydration, urinary tract health, and more. We may recommend this as part of a broader health assessment.

Tailored Anaesthetic and Pain Management

Each pet is different, and so is their care. We tailor all anaesthetic and pain relief medications to suit your pet’s species, age, weight, medical history, and current condition. This individualised approach ensures a safer anaesthetic experience and a more comfortable recovery.

IV Fluids & Supportive Care

During many surgical and diagnostic procedures, we administer IV fluid therapy to maintain blood pressure, support hydration, and help your pet’s body cope with anaesthesia or illness. IV fluids are especially important for older pets or those undergoing longer procedures, and can improve recovery times and overall outcomes.

Monitoring and Recovery

Your pet's safety is our priority. During all procedures, we use multi-parameter monitoring equipment, which includes:

  • Heart rate

  • Respiratory rate

  • Blood pressure

  • Oxygen levels

  • Body temperature

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Continuous blood pressure monitoring helps us detect any subtle changes in circulation and respond immediately if needed, reducing the risk of anaesthetic complications — especially in senior or medically complex patients.

After surgery or diagnostics, your pet will be cared for in our quiet recovery area. Our trained staff provide close post-operative monitoring, ensuring your pet is comfortable, stable, and ready to go home safely.

Blood Sampling in Pets

Blood sampling is a valuable diagnostic tool that helps us monitor your pet’s health, detect illness early, and guide treatment decisions. We offer a wide range of in-house and external blood tests, tailored to your pet’s age, species, clinical signs, and medical history.

Why Blood Tests Are Important

Even when pets appear healthy, internal issues can sometimes go unnoticed without testing. Blood tests can:

  • Establish baseline health data

  • Detect early signs of disease

  • Monitor ongoing conditions

  • Assess organ function before surgery or anaesthesia

  • Help guide appropriate treatment plans

We may recommend blood sampling as part of routine health screening, pre-anaesthetic checks, or if your pet is unwell.

Common Types of Blood Tests We Offer

  • Haematology (Full Blood Count)
This test examines the red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. It can detect anaemia, infection, inflammation, immune responses, or clotting problems.

  • Biochemistry Panel
Evaluates organ function — including the liver, kidneys, electrolytes, and glucose levels — and helps us assess metabolic health.

  • Thyroid Testing (T4)
Useful particularly in older pets. Low T4 can indicate hypothyroidism (more common in dogs), while high T4 may suggest hyperthyroidism (especially in cats).

  • Pancreatic Lipase (Spec cPL/fPL)
A specific test to help diagnose pancreatitis in dogs (cPL) or cats (fPL), especially when there are signs like vomiting, abdominal pain, or inappetence.

  • Pre-Anaesthetic Bloods
Recommended before surgical procedures, especially in senior pets, to check organ health and ensure safe anaesthetic planning.

  • Monitoring Tests
For pets on long-term medications (e.g. for epilepsy, arthritis, thyroid disease, or kidney disease), regular blood testing ensures treatment is both safe and effective.

What to Expect

Blood sampling is a quick and minimally invasive procedure. We typically take a small sample from a vein in your pet’s neck or leg. Most pets tolerate it well, and we always aim to make the experience as stress-free as possible.

Some results are available the same day using our in-house laboratory, while others may be sent to a specialist external lab with results returned within 24–72 hours.

X-Ray Services – Coming Soon

At present, we do not currently offer in-house X-ray imaging at our practice. However, we are excited to share that we are undergoing refurbishment and are in the process of introducing X-ray facilities to expand our diagnostic capabilities.

This upgrade will allow us to provide even more comprehensive care under one roof, including the ability to diagnose conditions affecting bones, joints, chest, and abdomen with greater speed and accuracy.

In the meantime, if your pet requires an X-ray, we can refer you to a trusted local clinic or specialist centre and continue to support you and your pet throughout the process.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress — and look forward to offering this new service soon!
