End of life and palliative care

End of life care

Coping with the impending loss of a pet is one of the most difficult experiences pet owners will face. Whether your pet has been diagnosed with a terminal illness or simply approaching his golden years, it's important to have a plan in place to ensure your pet receives the best possible care throughout.

Caring for an elderly pet

When caring for an elderly pet, it's important to minimise any possible pain or distress she may experience day-to-day. You can do this for him by...

  • Consulting your vet to ensure there are no undiagnosed issues causing discomfort or rapid deterioration
  •  Surround her with her favourite things such as her cosy blanket or special teddy
  • For pets with limited mobility, pressure sores can develop so it's important to provide a warm bed with plenty of cushioning for support
  • Older pets may develop incontinence, so be sure to check your pet regularly for any soiling or dampness
  • Purchase a sling or use a large towel to wrap under his body and assist him when getting up
  • Consider the environment e.g. you may need to provide a rug where there is no carpet, avoid using stairs where possible, limiting exercise and introducing raised food bowls.

Hospice or palliative care

This care is given when your pet is suffering from a terminal illness and a cure is not possible. With proper use of pain medications and dietary advice, you can make your pet's final days or weeks more pleasant and comfortable. Pet hospice is not a place, but a personal choice to provide dignified end-of-life care.

If you decide hospice care is something you would like to explore, please bare in mind that you will become your pet's primary nurse and caregiver, as well as the link between your pet and the veterinary team. When considering hospice care, pet parents should be very careful not to prolong the suffering of pets who are in pain or experiencing poor quality of life.
