The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has recently updated its prescribing guidelines for all veterinary practices in the UK. These changes are in place to ensure the responsible use of medications, particularly antibiotics and prescription-only treatments, to protect animal and public health.
As a result, we are now required to follow stricter rules when prescribing certain medications.
We are now required to see your pet in person before prescribing:
Antibiotics
Pain relief (e.g. NSAIDs)
Any medication for new conditions, or when a repeat prescription is needed for an ongoing issue
This applies even if your pet has had the same issue previously. A clinical examination is essential to ensure the medication is appropriate, safe, and still effective. This also supports efforts to reduce antibiotic resistance.
We are only able to prescribe flea, tick, and worm treatments if:
Your pet has been examined by one of our vets within the last 12 months, and
The treatment is prescribed at the time of that examination
If it has been more than 12 months since your pet’s last health check, we will need to see them for a short consultation before we can provide any parasite prevention treatments.
These new guidelines help to:
Ensure medications are used safely and appropriately
Combat the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance
Ensure your pet’s treatment is up-to-date and tailored to their current weight and condition
Maintain the highest standards of veterinary care
These prescribing rules are a legal requirement set by the RCVS, and not something we are able to override.
We understand that changes to policy can sometimes be frustrating, but we ask for your patience and understanding with our team. Abusive language or behaviour will not be tolerated, and our staff reserve the right to terminate phone calls or interactions in such instances.
Thank you for helping us maintain a respectful, professional environment while we care for your pets.
